About Dr. Mindy Parsons

The Sand Tray Studio

Created by a therapist who believes the most powerful work often happens in the sand.

I'm a licensed mental health counselor, board-certified clinical mental health counselor, Registered Play Therapist-Supervisor, and Registered Sandtray Therapist-Certified Trainer with a Ph.D. and nearly two decades of clinical experience working with children, adolescents, adults, and families. Sandtray therapy has been at the center of my practice for most of that time — and teaching it to other therapists has become one of the most meaningful parts of my work.

I've supervised graduate students in counseling, trained therapists in sandtray and play therapy approaches, and presented at APT, NASAP, and FAPT. I've also published in both areas. That ongoing work — sitting with therapists as they learn, question, and grow — is what shaped everything I've built here.

The Sand Tray Studio grew from a simple desire: to share the tools and ideas I kept wishing existed. The Dog Bone Sand Tray was designed from clinical need. The Prompt Cards were built from years of session experience. And the individual consultations are an extension of the supervision and training work I've always found most rewarding.

If you're here, you're probably someone who takes this work seriously — who wants to go deeper, think more carefully, and bring more intention to every session. That's exactly who I made this for. I'd love for you to explore what's here, and I'm always glad to think through the work together.

A philosophy of presence

I believe sandtray therapy works because it gives clients a way to say what they can't yet put into words. The miniatures, the sand, the shape of the tray — all of it creates distance that paradoxically allows people to get closer to what's true for them.

My role — and yours — is to hold that space with curiosity and without urgency. To follow the client's lead. To trust the process even when it's slow, even when it's quiet, even when a tray sits unchanged for three sessions in a row.

The tools I create are designed to support that kind of presence. Not to script the work, but to free you up to be fully in it.
